Studio Ghibli week at Duke: February 6-10, 2024
Duke University Union Freewater Presentations and APSI are collaborating to bring three films from the award-winning Studio Ghibli to Duke's campus the week of February 6-10, 2024.
All three films selected for this showcase were directed by the legendary Hayao Miyazaki (宮崎 駿). Screenings will take place in the Griffith Film Theater in the Bryan Center on February 6, 8, 9 and 10.
My Neighbor Totoro (となりのトトロ)
(97 mins; Japan; in Japanese with English subtitles)
The first film, My Neighbor Totoro, will be screened on Tuesday, February 6, at 7PM and 10:00PM. This modern classic has been described as "An otherworldly tale of childhood and a definitive work of imagination."
Spirited Away (千と千尋の神隠し)
(2001; 125 mins; Japan; in Japanese with English subtitles)
The second film, Spirited Away, takes viewers into a fantasy world where Japanese myths and legends come to life. Screenings will take place at 7PM and 10PM on Thursday, February 8.
The Boy and the Heron (君たちはどう生きるか)
(2023; 124 mins; Japan; in Japanese with English subtitles)
The final film in this series is the newly-released The Boy and the Heron, rumored to be the director's final feature-length production, though fans hope he may once again return for future projects. Released to global audiences at the end of 2023, this film has been described as "a mature, complex masterpiece, weaving together the director's past, present, and future -- a beautiful enigma that promises to be worth the wait." Duke audiences will have three opportunities to see this film on campus: on Friday, February 9, at 7PM and 10PM; the final screening will take place Saturday, February 10, at 7PM.
Information about each screening can be found on APSI's upcoming events page.
