APSI Visiting Scholars’ Seminar

Speaker

Wanying Yang; Zeyi Song

In this February 2026 seminar, two visiting scholars, Wanying Yang and Zeyi Song, will share findings from their research, inviting the audience to engage with questions and feedback:

Wanying Yang—“Novels as the Modern Arabs’ Dīwān: An Overview of Contemporary Arabic Historical Writing”

Abstract:
Historical writing is a central theme in contemporary Arabic novels. Some works revisit neglected ancient history, showing its lasting influence and drawing inspiration from past civilizations to illuminate present issues. Others focus on modern traumas and painful memories, combining humanistic concern with political critique. Recently, many works explore post-trauma narratives, highlighting literature’s role in recording and healing individual and collective wounds.

Zeyi Song—“Enclave in the Capital: Jurisdiction and Legal Order in Beijing’s Diplomatic Quarter”

Abstract:
After the Boxer Rebellion of 1900, the foreign legations in Beijing established the Diplomatic Quarter in Dongjiaominxiang. Closed to Chinese residents, this enclave became home to diplomats, journalists, missionaries, artists, and refugees. Within its boundaries, they constructed a self-governing community with its own legal and administrative order, setting it apart from other foreign concessions in China. This unique character makes the Diplomatic Quarter a distinctive lens through which to understand the history and legal order of modern Beijing and China.
