(Hark Tsui, 1986, 104 min, Hong Kong, Cantonese with English subtitles)
Introduction by Professor Eileen Chow (Asian & Middle Eastern Studies).
Synopsis
In 1913 Beijing, in the aftermath of China’s first democratic revolution, three fierce young women from very different backgrounds—disguised rebel Tsao Wan, jewel-seeking Sheung Hung, and opera heiress Pat Neil (Brigitte Lin, Cherie Chung, Sally Yeh)—cross paths on a quest for liberation. Together, the trio embarks on a daring quest filled with intrigue and betrayal, challenging societal norms amidst political turmoil and the vibrant world of Peking Opera.
Elegantly blending action, comedy, and social satire into a sparkling, fast-paced whirlwind as bright and colorful as Peking opera itself, this classic of Hong Kong cinema showcases the charms of its three leads as well as the energetic filmmaking style of legendary director Tsui Hark at his height.
