What does a respected researcher and senior fellow at the Brookings Institution share with martial arts superstars Jackie Chan and Jet Li? With this opening query (and introduction of the Chinese characters that make up his name), Dr. Cheng Li spoke to a capacity crowd in the Rubenstein Library on September 19, 2017.

Sharing insights into the Chinese political system that he has gained over many years of intensive research, Dr. Li engaged a rapt audience in a review of Chinese politics in the Xi Jinping era. Particularly salient for China watchers anticipating the upcoming 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (scheduled for October 18-24, 2017), he analyzed the key leadership figures who have risen to (and fallen from) power over the past decades and provided suggestions on some of the directions China may take.

A lively Q&A followed the presentation with students, faculty, and community members seizing the opportunity to expand the discussion into trade, economics, and foreign policy.
