Beginning in Fall 2018, Duke students will find a new addition to their menu of options: the Asian American Studies Program has officially been launched at the university. This initiative is the product of a decade of student activism, supported by faculty around the campus, including APSI's own Nayoung Aimee Kwon, who will serve as the program's inaugural director. Although students will not yet be able to declare a minor (or major) in Asian-American Studies, the formal recognition of the program is the first step towards an official certificate/minor/major option for students. This program will benefit from two additions to campus: Ryan Ku, a postdoctoral fellow who will teach "Introduction to Asian American Literature" this fall; and a tenure-track professor, Esther Kim Lee, in the theater studies department.
