Esther Kim Lee receives 2023 Distinguished Scholar Award from the American Society for Theatre Research
Duke faculty are at the forefront of research and teaching in their fields, and it is wonderful when professors affiliated with APSI attain recognition for their outstanding efforts and achievements. Today, we are pleased to be able to share some happy news:
The American Society for Theatre Research's Distinguished Scholar Award is annually presented to "a scholar whose body of work has made a significant contribution to the field of theatre, dance, opera, and/or performance studies." In 2023, that scholar is Professor Esther Kim Lee, a member of the core APSI faculty as well as the Frances Hill Fox Professor of Theater Studies, professor of international comparative studies and history, and the Director of Asian American and Diaspora Studies at Duke. She specializes in theatre history and dramatic criticism, teaching and writing about Asian American theatre, Korean diaspora theatre, interculturalism, and globalization and theatre.
The American Society for Theatre Research (ASTR) is a U.S.-based professional organization that fosters scholarship on worldwide theatre and performance, both historical and contemporary. Founded in 1956 to encourage theatre scholarship, it is the only theatre organization in the United States affiliated with the International Federation for Theatre Research (IFTR/FIRT) and the American Council of Learned Societies. As one of the preeminent scholarly societies in the field, ASTR sponsors or coordinates multiple awards, grants, fellowships, and prizes to support and recognize outstanding scholarship in theatre and performance studies.
