My name is Yining Yan, and I also go by Lilia. I hold my B.A. in Global China Studies and Social Sciences (Anthropology track) from New York University Shanghai. My research interests lie at the intersection of contemporary popular media culture and Sino-Japanese cultural exchange, approached through media studies, visual analysis, ethnography, and gender and sexuality studies. Specifically, I am fascinated by the socio-cultural implications of video games in East Asian societies. For my undergraduate thesis, I examined the game Genshin Impact and its association with “Chineseness.” At Duke, I aim to deepen my expertise in the field and enhance my methodological skills, particularly in ethnography and visual analysis. Beyond my academic pursuits, I am an avid fan of video games, K-pop, and travel.
