My name is Yifan He, and you can call me Yifan. I grew up in Sichuan Province, southwestern China. Before coming to Duke, I received my first M.A. degree at Guangzhou University, where I majored in Modern and Contemporary Chinese Literature, with a focus on women's writing from the early to mid-twentieth century. Through my previous studies, I expanded my research perspective to include the historical circumstances and literary expressions of East Asian women, East Asian migrants, sexual minorities, and other culturally marginalized groups, investigating how literature records, shapes, and intervenes in diverse social experiences.
In the future, I will continue to focus on women’s writing and its circulation across media, examining how literature, film, and digital narratives collectively shape the public articulation of women’s experiences. At the same time, I seek to situate Chinese literature within a comparative East Asian and cross-cultural perspective, reexamining its relationship to regional histories, politics, and social structures as preparation for future study.
Beyond academics, I enjoy reading, watching movies, listening to pop music, and traveling. I'm excited to join the Duke EAS community and look forward to meeting everyone.
